Packing Tips

  1. Label all boxes on all sides for easy identification from any angle.
  2. Try to keep boxes uniform in size.
  3. Completely fill each box with heavier items in first and lighter items on top. Use paper to fill in empty areas to avoid boxes from collapsing.
  4. Bring in the largest items first, appliances and then furniture.
  5. Keep mirrors upright, tie them in place or place them between a mattress & box spring. Never flat.
  6. Position long items such as box springs, mattresses, tabletops & sofas along the sides and up on end.
  7. Pack books, videos and CDs in smaller boxes to avoid getting too heavy.
  8. Put heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
  9. Plan your storage space. Items that you will use most often should be placed at the front of the unit.
  10. Leave a center aisle for easy access.
  11. Use the space in bookshelves and entertainment centers for boxes.
  12. Odd shaped items may fit along side or on top of other items.
  13. Sofas and love seats can be stored on end to save floor space. Cushions can then be placed on top.
  14. Tables with removable legs can be “broken down” to save space.
  15. Remember to leave refrigerator and freezer doors open slightly. The area inside can be used for extra storage space.
  16. To prevent tools from rusting, wipe on a few drops of oil. Store away from items such as furniture to avoid staining.
  17. Shovels, hoes, rakes and hoses can be stored together in empty trash cans.
  18. Drain all gas and oil from lawnmowers, trimmers, etc.
  19. Make an inventory of all items being stored and keep it in a safe place at home.
