When it comes to picking a self storage unit, the size really matters. Whether you're moving to a new place, downsizing to a smaller home, stashing away seasonal gear, managing small business inventory, or finding a spot for your boat or trailer, knowing exactly what you need to store can save you time, money, and hassle. It's easy to guess and end up paying for space you don't use or cramming a unit until you can't move around inside it. That's why taking a moment to think about the volume and types of items you have, how often you'll need to access them, and any special storage requirements can make all the difference.

For many folks, storage needs vary widely-from a few boxes and small furniture pieces to bulky appliances, outdoor equipment, or even vehicles. Some might only need a spot to keep holiday decorations or a bike, while others are looking to store an entire household's worth of belongings or business supplies. Considering how often you'll visit your unit also helps decide whether you want a cozy space packed tight or a larger one with room to move around.

Getting this groundwork right sets you up for choosing a unit size that fits your belongings comfortably without stretching your budget. It also makes organizing and accessing your things easier down the road. With a clear idea of your storage needs, you can pick a space that works well for you and avoid surprises later on.

Introduction: How To Pick The Right Storage Unit Size In Woodstock

Bells Ferry Storage is a locally owned self storage facility in Woodstock, GA offering multiple storage unit sizes plus outdoor parking for household items, business items, and vehicles. We provide drive-up access units in a range of sizes along with parking for boats, trailers, trucks, and automobiles.

Most folks do not walk around knowing how many boxes fit in a 10x10 unit, so they guess. That guess often leads to overpaying for space they never use, or ending up with a unit that feels packed edge to edge and hard to walk through. We see it with apartment residents between leases, families in single-family homes juggling a remodel, and small businesses trying to get inventory out of the garage.

In this guide we walk through how to think about what you are storing, how common storage unit sizes compare to familiar spaces like a bedroom or garage, and simple packing habits that let you use space safely and efficiently. We also share examples based on everyday situations across Cherokee County so you can match your own needs. By the end, you should feel confident choosing the right unit size at Bells Ferry Storage without paying for more space than you actually use.

Common Storage Unit Sizes at Bells Ferry Storage and What They Fit

We keep our storage unit sizes simple and familiar so you can picture the space without pulling out a tape measure. All units are drive-up, so you load straight from your vehicle into the unit.

Smaller Units: Boxes, Seasonal Items, and Extras

5x5 unit (about a walk-in closet) - Good for stacked boxes, small bookcases, totes of holiday décor, a bike, and a few small pieces like end tables or nightstands. Think of clearing a crowded hall closet or a small storage room.
5x10 unit (small bedroom size) - Works for the contents of a studio or a small one-room office. Common items include a mattress set, dresser, TV, several chairs, 10-15 medium boxes, and a few shelving units. Many folks use this during a room remodel or when combining households.
6x10 unit - Similar footprint to a 5x10 with a little extra elbow room. Handy when you have a few more odd-shaped pieces, like a loveseat, patio set, or taller bookshelves along with boxes.

Mid-Size Units: Apartment and Small Home Moves

10x10 unit (standard bedroom) - Often used for the contents of a one-bedroom apartment. Fits a mattress set, sofa, coffee table, dining set for four, dressers, TVs, and 15-20 boxes. This size also works well if you are thinning out a basement or garage but still want space to walk down the middle.
10x12 unit - Adds breathing room over a 10x10. Good for a fuller one-bedroom or a lightly furnished two-bedroom place. You can line furniture along the walls and keep a clear path for access.
10x15 unit - Suited for a typical two-bedroom home or larger apartment. Handles multiple bedroom sets, a sectional sofa, larger appliances like a washer and dryer, plus 20-25 boxes. Small business owners often use this size for inventory, parts, and seasonal displays.

Larger Units: Multi-Bedroom Homes and Business Storage

10x18 unit - A good match for a fuller two- or smaller three-bedroom home, including bulky items such as armoires, exercise equipment, or extra outdoor furniture. Also useful for contractors storing tools, ladders, and job materials.
10x20 unit (single-car garage) - Fits most three-bedroom homes with standard furniture, large appliances, mattresses, a sectional or two couches, dining set, and many stacked boxes. Some folks use this as an extension of their garage for lawn equipment, storage racks, and seasonal décor.
10x22 unit - Offers a little more depth than a 10x20, which helps with oversized pieces or when you want broader aisles between stacks. Handy for larger furniture sets, hobby gear, or bulkier business inventory.
10x25 unit - Works for a well-furnished three- to four-bedroom home, including large sectionals, multiple bedroom suites, appliances, and plenty of boxes. Many small businesses use this footprint to organize shelving rows and still move a hand truck or cart through the center.
10x30 unit (deep garage) - Our largest standard unit size and a good fit for a larger home or combined households. There is room for several bedroom sets, big living room pieces, full dining furniture, appliances, outdoor gear, and dozens of boxes, with space to set up clear walkways if items are stacked smartly.

When you picture these sizes, think in terms of rooms you already know: walk-in closet, bedroom, and single-car garage. That simple comparison keeps you from guessing and gives a clearer sense of how your own furniture, boxes, and gear fit into each unit.

How To Estimate The Right Storage Unit Size For Your Woodstock Home

Once you have a feel for how our unit sizes compare to rooms in a home, the next step is to measure what you are storing instead of guessing.

Start With A Simple Inventory

We like to break everything into three groups: furniture, boxes/totes, and odd items.

Furniture: List every large piece you plan to store: beds, dressers, couches, tables, desks, shelves, appliances.
Boxes and totes: Estimate how many small, medium, and large boxes you will pack.
Odd items: Things that do not box up neatly, such as bikes, grills, yard tools, or exercise equipment.

Once that list is done, cross off anything that will be sold, donated, or tossed. It keeps you from paying for space that holds items you no longer need.

Measure The Big Pieces

For furniture and appliances, grab a tape measure and note length and depth in feet. You do not need every fraction.

Measure sofas, mattresses, and tables by the footprint they take on the floor.
For tall pieces like bookcases and dressers, measure width and depth. Height matters less because we plan to stack.
Jot these down in a quick list so you can see how they will line up along a wall of a 5-foot, 10-foot, or longer unit.

Use Box Stacks To Picture The Space

Medium boxes are easiest to stack safely. A rough guide is:

Six to eight medium boxes stacked together use about the same floor space as a standard armchair.
A row of boxes 2 feet deep and 5 feet wide fits along the back wall of a 5x5 unit.
Two neat rows of boxes along each side wall still leave a center path in a 10x10 unit.

Think in rows: furniture against the walls, then boxes stacked on top of solid pieces or just in front of them, leaving a narrow aisle down the middle.

Match Your List To A Unit Size

Now connect your numbers to what we described earlier:

If your list looks like a single bedroom set, a couch, and 10-15 boxes, look toward a 10x10 rather than anything larger.
Two bedroom sets, a sectional, and 20 or more boxes usually push you into the 10x15 to 10x20 range.
When you mainly have boxes, small furniture, and seasonal items, one of the small storage units is usually plenty if you stack up to shoulder height.

A simple rule of thumb: count your furnished rooms. One fully furnished room plus boxes tends to land in the 5x10 to 10x10 range. Two to three furnished rooms usually fit a mid-size unit. Larger homes or combined households fill the bigger garage-style spaces.

To double-check your guess, use a storage unit size calculator or sketch a quick floor plan on paper with rough furniture outlines. That few minutes of planning keeps you from renting a unit that is two sizes larger than you need, and it sets you up for smart packing so every square foot works for you.

Packing And Organizing Tips To Maximize Your Storage Space

Once the unit size is picked, the way we pack and stack does most of the work. Smart loading often means you stay in a smaller unit while still keeping everything accessible.

Start With Solid, Stackable Boxes

Use sturdy boxes in just a few uniform sizes. Mixed shapes waste floor space and lean more easily. Fill boxes fully so sides do not cave in, but keep weight reasonable so one person can lift them.

Pack heavy items like books in smaller boxes and lighter items like bedding in larger ones. Tape seams well and avoid odd bags unless they sit on top of a stack.

Label So You Are Not Digging Later

Write clear labels on at least two sides of every box. Include room and a short list of key contents, such as "Kitchen - pans, mixer" or "Office - invoices, cords." Place boxes with more urgent items toward the front or at eye level.

Disassemble Furniture To Shrink The Footprint

Take legs off tables and remove headboards from bed frames when possible. Stand mattresses on end along a wall. Store tabletops upright, protected with blankets or cardboard. Slip hardware for each piece into a labeled bag and tape it to the furniture.

Use Vertical Space And Create Aisles

Think in layers. Put the heaviest, sturdiest pieces on the floor and build up from there:

Place dressers, shelves, or washers along the back and side walls.
Stack boxes on top of solid furniture, largest on the bottom, lighter items higher up.
Leave a narrow walkway from the door to the back so you are not unloading half the unit to find one box.

Keep items you expect to grab often near the front of the unit or at the ends of your aisle.

Load Smart With Drive-Up Units

Because every unit at Bells Ferry Storage is drive-up, you back your vehicle close to the door and move heavier items straight from tailgate to floor. It makes it easier to place the big pieces first, stack boxes safely, and adjust your layout on the spot instead of shuffling loads across a hallway. When packing with these habits, the square footage you already chose works harder, and you avoid bumping up to a larger size just to gain elbow room.

Special Storage Considerations: Vehicle Parking And Business Use In Woodstock

Household moves are only part of the picture. Around here, a lot of the space pressure comes from vehicles you are not allowed to keep in the driveway or on the street. Many HOAs and tighter neighborhoods make it tough to park a boat, camper trailer, work truck, or spare car at home, so outdoor parking fills that gap.

We set up our parking rows with that in mind. Boat owners tend to want longer spaces with room to swing a trailer. Folks with work trucks or flatbed trailers usually care more about easy pull-through access so they are not backing across tight corners. Daily drivers or extra family cars often sit in shorter spots closer to the entrance for quick in-and-out access.

Business storage needs look different from a home cleanout. Inventory, tools, or displays need clear aisles and repeat access, not just a packed unit that stays closed for months. Smaller operations often start in mid-size units to hold boxes, shelving, and a few rolling carts. Contractors or light commercial users lean toward the larger garage-style spaces so they can park hand trucks, stack pallets, and still walk or roll equipment through the center without unloading half the unit each time they stop by.

Comparing Storage Unit Sizes And Pricing In Woodstock: What To Expect

Once unit sizes make sense, the next question is how the monthly rent changes as you move up in square footage. Prices at Bells Ferry Storage follow a predictable pattern: smaller units cost less per month, while larger garage-style spaces cost more overall but usually give you a lower cost per square foot.

Think of the smaller sizes, like 5x5 and 5x10, as the entry point. These work for boxes, smaller furniture, and seasonal items, so the monthly rate stays on the lower side. As you step into mid-size units such as 10x10 or 10x15, the price rises because you are now in "apartment move" territory, but the space often replaces a higher rent for a bigger home or extra office.

The largest units, from 10x20 up to 10x30, carry the highest monthly tag, yet they usually serve full-home moves or business storage. When packed well, they cut down on renting multiple smaller units, which keeps your total spend in check.

Where Bells Ferry Storage differs from many nearby facilities is how simple the bill is. We do not add admin fees, deposits, or surprise charges, so what you see on the rate sheet is what you pay each month. That clarity makes it easier to compare storage unit sizes in Woodstock, Georgia, against your budget and pick the right footprint without guessing about extras.
